J. McMahon and Sons Medium Shell Grit is a 20 kg bag of crushed seashell in the medium grade, sized for poultry and most medium to large parrots. It is a breeder's quality mineral and calcium supplement.

  • Medium grade, suited to poultry and medium to large parrots
  • Supplies calcium carbonate, the main component of an eggshell
  • Provides grit for the gizzard to help break down seed and grain

Hens draw heavily on calcium during lay, so offer grit free choice from about two weeks before point of lay, usually 16 to 18 weeks of age. Offer in a separate container so birds take what they need, and keep clean drinking water available at all times.

Feeding questions

Do hens need shell grit if the feed has calcium? The layer food carries the calcium for shells; grit offered free choice covers the extra a heavy layer draws on and gives the gizzard grit to grind grain. Offer it in a separate container so hens self-regulate.
