Johnson's describes Alfalfa Plus as a highly nutritional and palatable pelleted feed for all horses, formulated as a cool feed that is high in fibre and very low in starch and sugars. According to the manufacturer, it suits horses in light, medium or heavy work, as well as retired, spelling, breeding and growing horses, and its low starch and sugar levels may benefit horses with tie-up, laminitis, Cushing's, insulin resistance or equine metabolic syndrome. Johnson's recommends introducing it gradually over 1 to 2 weeks, feeding alongside roughage such as pasture or hay, and dividing the daily amount into smaller feeds if it exceeds 0.5 kg per 100 kg of bodyweight per day. The manufacturer states horses need 1.5 to 2% of bodyweight in roughage daily, with clean water available at all times.
