Choose by the job you want the treat to do: a crunchy dental style, a mainstream crunchy or creamy treat, or a single-ingredient freeze-dried treat, then follow the feeding guidance on the product. Cat treats are not all alike, and each maker makes its own statements about its product, so this guide sorts the treats we list into three kinds and sets out what each maker says. Where a statement comes from a maker, we say so, so you can check it against the product in front of you.
The three kinds of cat treat
Most of the treats we list fall into one of three groups. Dental crunchy treats are the textured bites that Greenies makes. Mainstream crunchy and creamy treats are represented here by Temptations. Single-ingredient freeze-dried treats are made from one named ingredient, and each maker describes freeze-drying as its process. Inaba Churu lickable treats are a separate category, covered in our Inaba Churu flavour guide.
Dental crunchy treats
Greenies calls its cat range dental treats. Its Australian cat range page says the textured surface helps scrub away tartar buildup with every bite. Its product page says the specially formulated crunchy texture is designed to reduce tartar buildup by letting the cat's teeth sink deeply into the treat. These are the maker's statements about texture and tartar, not promises about your cat's teeth. For wider background, read our guide to dental care for dogs and cats.
Mainstream crunchy and creamy treats
Temptations' US site is the only Temptations material we draw on, and we use it for two things only: the kinds of treat the brand makes and its general feeding advice. It describes crunchy Classics, which are crunchy outside and soft inside, and creamy Tender Fills, which have a double creamy filling. Those are US product lines, and we are not saying any of them is the same as an Australian product.
The two Temptations products we list are Creamy Spoons Chicken and Savoury Salmon, four 10g spoons, and Snacks Tasty Chicken in a 180g size. For these Australian products, we go only by what their names say: Creamy Spoons in chicken and savoury salmon, and Snacks Tasty Chicken.
Single-ingredient freeze-dried treats
Four of the treats we list are freeze-dried, and each maker names a single ingredient. FreePet, the Australian owner and distributor of Freecat, says its salmon cubes are 100% salmon fillet with salmon as the only ingredient, and that its whole sardines are 100% human-grade whole sardines. K9 Feline Natural, a New Zealand maker, says its chicken treats are made from 100% New Zealand cage free chicken, with no artificial preservatives or flavours, no grains and no gluten. Freezy Paws, an Australian maker, says its sardine treats have one ingredient, premium wild-caught whole sardine, with no preservatives, fillers or artificial additives.
The makers also publish analysis figures. K9 Feline Natural gives a guaranteed analysis of minimum crude protein 46%, minimum crude fat 31%, maximum crude fibre 2%, maximum moisture 8% and a calorie content of ME 4348 kcal/kg. Freezy Paws gives a typical analysis of crude protein min 70.0%, crude fat min 4.2%, crude fibre max 3.0%, moisture max 5.0% and 2892 kcal/kg.
How to offer treats
Temptations' US site lists four ways to offer treats: as a reward for good behaviour, in a bowl as a daily snack, by hand during playtime, or added to cat food as a topper. It also says treats should complement, not replace, an actual meal. Freezy Paws says its treats can be fed dry, either served directly as a crunchy treat or crumbed into the main meal, or rehydrated by adding 10ml of lukewarm water per 1g of treat and soaking for 40 to 60 seconds. FreePet says its freeze-dried treats can be used as a reward or daily treat, in moderation, and asks owners to make sure cats always have access to fresh water.
If weight is a concern, speak with your cat's vet. For how treats fit alongside meals, see our guide to cat food basics: wet, dry and treats.

Frequently asked questions
How many treats can a cat have each day?
Temptations' US site says to stick to the recommended serving size for your cat's size, and to check the feeding guidelines on the product because this varies from treat to treat. It also says treats should not make up more than 10% of daily calories, and that they should complement a meal, not replace one.
Can kittens have freeze-dried treats?
FreePet, Freecat's Australian distributor, says its Freecat freeze-dried treats are recommended for cats over 12 weeks.
What are Greenies cat treats?
Greenies makes dental treats for cats, and says their crunchy texture is designed to reduce tartar buildup. Its Australian cat range page lists chicken, salmon, tuna and catnip flavours.
How should I store cat treats?
Temptations' US site recommends storing any package, opened or closed, in a cool, dry environment, and says to re-seal the bag after opening to help keep the treats fresh. FreePet says its freeze-dried treats should be kept in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight.
What is the difference between freeze-dried and crunchy cat treats?
The freeze-dried treats in our list each name a single ingredient, such as salmon, chicken or sardine, and each maker describes freeze-drying as its process. K9 Feline Natural says the process locks in the flavour. Crunchy treats are described by texture instead: Greenies says its crunchy texture is designed to reduce tartar buildup, and Temptations' US site describes its Classics as crunchy outside and soft inside.
