Single protein dog food is built around one animal protein, but a meat named on the front of the bag is not a promise of a single protein source. The makers' own ingredient lists show that a bag named after one meat can also contain chicken, fish and other animal ingredients. To check any bag, read the full ingredient panel.
What single protein and limited ingredient mean
Shoppers usually use "single protein" to mean a food where one animal is the only meat source. None of the maker pages we checked defines that term, and none defines "limited ingredient" either. Terms on the front of bags differ, so the ingredient panel is the thing to read.
The name on the front is the starting point, not the answer. For broader advice, see our practical guide to choosing dog food in Australia.
How to read an ingredient panel
Work through the whole list, from the first ingredient to the last. Look for these items, even when the bag name suggests a single meat:
- Meals, such as kangaroo meal, chicken meal, fish meal or meat meals.
- Fats and oils, such as chicken fat, tallow (beef and/or poultry), salmon oil, fish oil or emu oil.
- Gravies, such as chicken gravy.
- Eggs, which both Black Hawk and Hypro Premium list.
Any of these can come from a different animal than the one in the product name, so a named first ingredient is only one line of the list. The typical analysis on a bag gives percentages such as crude protein and crude fat. A percentage does not tell you how many protein sources a food contains, so the ingredient panel is where to check that.
Three worked examples from the makers' lists
Each example summarises the ingredient list printed on the maker's own page. For the exact list of the product you buy, use the bag's ingredient panel.
Black Hawk Grain Free Kangaroo. Black Hawk lists kangaroo meal first, followed by chicken meal. The same list includes fish meal, chicken fat, chicken gravy, salmon oil and egg. Black Hawk also states that the food is formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profile for the maintenance of adult dogs.
Hypro Premium Grain Free Kangaroo & Lamb. The name refers to kangaroo and lamb, but Hypro Premium's list starts with meat meals from kangaroo, lamb and chicken. It then lists tallow (beef and/or poultry), chicken gravy, egg and oils including fish oil.
Ivory Coat Grain Free Lamb & Kangaroo. Ivory Coat says its dry food is made with Australian lamb as the number one ingredient. Its page does not give a full ingredient list, so the bag's ingredient panel is where to see what else is in it.
Our Meals for Mutts single-protein range, as the supplier lists it
Our supplier lists three Meals for Mutts dry dog foods as single protein, grain and gluten free: kangaroo, lamb and chicken. The supplier lists each one in a 14 kg bag.
We have not been able to confirm the full ingredient lists for these three products with the maker, so this guide does not show them. Check the ingredient panel on the bag before you choose.
Feeding and changing foods
Use the feeding guide for the exact product you buy. Hypro Premium's feeding guide for its Kangaroo & Lamb says to adjust feeding amounts as necessary to maintain optimal weight. For dogs of 20 to 35 kg, the same guide lists 275 to 420 g (2⅓ to 3½ cups).
The maker pages we checked do not set out how to change a dog from one food to another, so follow the feeding guide for the food you choose and ask your vet.
When to talk to your vet
Suspected food allergy or intolerance is a question for your vet, not something to work out from a bag label. Black Hawk describes its grain free range as being for dogs prone to dietary sensitivities, or for owners who want to exclude grains. That is Black Hawk's wording, and this guide does not add to it.

Frequently asked questions
Is kangaroo dog food a single protein food?
Not always. Black Hawk's Grain Free Kangaroo lists chicken meal and fish meal alongside kangaroo meal, and Hypro Premium's Kangaroo & Lamb lists meat meals from kangaroo, lamb and chicken. Read the full ingredient panel on the bag.
What does grain free mean on a dog food bag?
Black Hawk's page for its Grain Free Kangaroo says 0% grains and glutens, with no wheat, corn, barley or rice, and says the range is for dogs prone to dietary sensitivities or owners who want to exclude grains. The other maker pages we checked do not define the term, so check the ingredient panel.
How do I check how many proteins are in a food?
Read the whole ingredient panel, not just the name or the first line. Check every animal named in the list, including meals, fats, gravies, eggs and oils, because the makers' lists show several animal sources under one product name. The percentages in the typical analysis do not show how many sources there are.
Can I switch my dog to a new food straight away?
The maker pages we checked do not say how quickly to change foods. Follow the feeding guide from the maker of the food you choose, and ask your vet before you change your dog's food.
Do I need a single protein food for an allergic dog?
That is a question for your vet. This guide does not say that any food treats, prevents or helps an allergy, and suspected food allergy or intolerance should be discussed with a vet first.
